July 30th 1715

- on this day 11 Spanish ships sunk in a hurricane in the shallows off the coast of Florida - they were Treasure Ships and lured in ne'er do wells from the ports of Port Royal, Tortuga and Nassau in search of easy-come loot. Pirate Henry Jennings  (and in fiction my own Jesamiah Acorne) among them, who went one better: he waited for the Spanish salvage teams to collect the booty and store it in a warehouse, then raided the warehouse coming away as a modern-day equivalent of a millionaire.

The lost treasure is still being found!


Thus began the start of piracy in the Caribbean....
